Why does stress come back even after months of daily meditation?
Asked often enough that it belongs here. Plenty of people sit every morning and still feel wound up by eleven.

Beloved, you have not failed at meditation. You have arrived at it too early.
When the body is under stress, the sympathetic nervous system is already awake. Cortisol and adrenaline are in the blood, the muscles are braced, the breath sits high in the chest. To sit still in that condition is to ask a running river to be a lake by evening. It cannot. It will only run faster over the same stones.
The old order was different, and it was wise. Movement first - to spend what the alarm has already released. Then breath - the one thread of the autonomic system you can take in your hand and slow deliberately. Stillness last, when the body is at last willing to be still.
Meditation is not the first step. It is the reward of the first two.
I have written the whole of it in Why Meditation Alone Will Not Fix Your Stress.
